DESCRIPTION: Clayton Donley founded OctetString in September 2000 as the
culmination of his work with LDAP and other directory technologies.
Donley had been a directory and security consultant to organizations
such as Bank One, GTE, IBM, McDonald’s, Merck, Motorola, Netscape Shaw
Cablesystems, Subaru of America and Blue-Cross and Blue-Shield of
Illinois. Through this experience, he saw firsthand the growing
challenges the proliferation of directories presented to those large
organizations and the shortcomings of conventional solutions. Donley
developed the first Java-based version of VDE and launched OctetString
without relying on venture capital or other investment funding.

DESCRIPTION: Started a two year process facilitated by the Link Tank, a group of two dozen professionals in the fields of digital communications, environmental activism, independent media, and socially responsible investment, who met regularly to discuss how a "next generation" Internet could support appropriate responses to the environmental crisis. The group commissioned three of its members to prepare a white paper that demonstrates the feasibility of the ASN's vision of online community by describing a technical architecture that could achieve this vision. The paper was presented at the PlaNetwork? Conference "Networking a Sustainable Future" in June, 2003. In addition Owen Davis learned about social networks and Identity as a result of this process and founded Identity Commons (2001) and the Interra Project was founded by Greg Seteltonpol.
