TYPE: [Federal Legislation] The Privacy Act
DESCRIPTION:
Act requires government agencies to show an individual any records
kept. Agencies are required to follow the Fair Information Practices
when gathering and handling personal data. Agencies must provide people
with access and correction rights; must limit data collection to only
the information necessary to fulfill a specified government function;
and must destroy data after a certain period of time. The Privacy Act
places restrictions on how agencies can share an individual’s data with
other people and agencies. Finally, the Act permits individuals to sue
