FAQ:

What is "The Story of Digital Identity"?

This site is dedicated to assembling information related to the legal, technical and social evolution of Digital Identity. If you would like to volunteer to help build this site or if you have information that you would like to contribute to this site please send email here.

Why all the "01/01" dates in the database?

There are many events in the database for which I don't have the exact date that it occurred. On the other hand there also many events for which I do have the exact date. Because I prefer the precision of being able to place an event on a specific date, I've had to enter a "default date" (01/01) in front the year for events for which I don't have a precise date. Therefore most events with "01/01" are just events that occured in a given year but since I don't have the day/month information for them I've just used a default date. That creates the problem that for events that actually occurr on "01/01" it will appear as though I've entered a default date when in fact that is the correct date. If that is so I will note that in the "Notes/Comments" field for such events.

Define "key" fields

Date: See above

Type: This is just a general descriptor for a given entry to provide a broad perspective of what that entry involves. For example if the entry regards a company involved in some aspect of Digital Identity that field will include the word "COMPANY".

ShortDescription: This field provides a more narrow description of the entry than does the "Type" field. This field should provide enough information for a reader to quickly determine if they want to select this entry to learn more about it by reading the "Notes/Comments" field.

Participants: This field lists any of the people involved in that event, where possible the "Notes/Comments" field will contact information for the people listed in the "Participants" field.

Tag: The tagging scheme for "A History of Digital Identity" starts with "HistDigID" which is the most general tag. The other words such as "Company" or "Technology" are appended to that tag to provide greater specificity. For example: Company.HistDigID, Technology.HistDigID.

The benefit of this approach to tagging is that readers can use the database search function to list all entries that conform to a given tag. So if you were to search on "Company.HistDigID" that would result in a listing of just the companies involved in Digital Identity that are listed in this database.

Feed: The "Feed" field lists XML feeds related to a given entry in "The Story of Digital Identity" database. Note that these feeds are usually for external feeds provided by one or more of the participants related that that particular entry in the database. Note that "The Story of Digital Identity" also provides feeds of its own. To view those feeds simply click "Feeds" at the top right of each page on this site.
